Frustrated DJs Leaving Soundcloud For Mixcloud

30 October 2011 4 Comments Posted by

Last night I was surfing reddit on my phone when I saw an interesting post in /r/DJs. User joeap posted a screenshot of an email from Soundcloud stating that his mixtape he uploaded contained copyrighted content and thus could no be published. I’ve run in to similar issues and have attached a screenshot below. In the comments, many users commiserated and lamented while others recommended migrating to Mixcloud. The interesting thing about that is, why doesn’t Mixcloud give you the same beef over copyrighted content? Another relevant question – do mixtapes/etc belong on Soundcloud? Some people feel Soundcloud is exclusively for original content.

It’s important to remember that Soundcloud states in their terms & conditions that copyrighted content is not allowed, nor is “fair use” content (it was once thought that using a copyrighted track in a mixtape constituted as fair use).

In my case, as seen above, I was merely trying to upload a remix that a producer sent in to me. But the file was rejected, seemingly due to the fact that any upload matching the keywords ‘Calvin Harris, Rihanna, We Found Love’ has been blocked.

So, what’s next for DJs? Do any of you care to share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences?

    Wasn’t that kind of obvious.

I was kind of confused when I saw whole 1 hour mixtapes on soundcloud.I knew mixcloud first, so I didn’t see any sense in Uploading mixtapes on Soundcloud.
I don’t know if it’s lazyness or some mystical marketing trick which makes the mixes appear on soundcloud.

Correct me If I’m wrong, but isn’t the soundcloud HQ in germany? If so, then you should think about the fact, that the GEMA are kind of bitches when it comes to world wide sharing of anything. So i guess the Soundcloud-Guys don’t have much choice, but to be “careful”.

I would be nice to hear a reason to upload mixes on soundcloud from a DJ-Guy.

    Cheers,

Was it obvious? Maybe some people will label me a ‘noob’ but I never personally saw Soundcloud exclusively as a site just for original content. I mean, even big name artists such as Excision, Funkagenda, Nicky Romero, etc etc even upload live sets on to there. I don’t think anyone is really sure if mixes belong on Soundcloud – even Soundcloud themselves.

Interesting input though; I appreciate your comment!

I’ve never been able to get into MixCloud. The SoundCloud interface is way, WAY more intuitive

Aha! You bring up another interesting point. Personally, I never really cared for Mixcloud’s design or layout. I also feel that Mixcloud lacks the userbase and overall community that Soundcloud has.

I uploaded identical mixtapes to both sites at the same time, and the mixtape on Soundcloud boasts a total of 5,772 views. On Mixcloud? A total 7. SEVEN PLAYS. I think that speaks for itself.
