Bassnectar Explains Dubstep

Alright, from now own whenever I see an all out comment war on a UKF Dubstep video, as opposed to fueling the flames by responding “omg you’re such a noob” I’m simply going to link to this video. Lorin aka Bassnectar explains in this kinetic typography / infographic style video what exactly dubstep is, and where it came from.
(Note: This audio sample is taken from an interview with MoBoogie, the original video can be seen here. I highly recommend it to any Bassnectar fan, as it’s extremely interesting!)

What The Hell Is “Complextro”?

Musical genres have come and gone over the years, some having a larger impact on society than others. As the international club scene continues to grow and electronic music producers gain an increasing amount of popularity, various spinoff genres begin to emerge as a result. These genres often begin as experimental adaptations of already popular forms of music. Producers begin to adapt the fundamentals of the emerging genre and a new sound is born. This is the same way iconic genres such as rock and roll came about.
Have you heard …

Digital Guitar cover of Skrillex/Benny Benassi – Cinema

The only way to describe is AMAZING. This guy uses his Misa digital guitar to cover the Skrillex remix of Benny Benassi’s Cinema. With the guitar he is able to sample the vocals just by touch. Further, he is able to replicate the synths used in the original track.

Beatportal Interview with Skrillex

For those of you who may have missed it, Beatport has put up a pretty lengthy interview with Skrillex. It’s an imfortative interview, which is good for fans who don’t know him from his days as singer for an emocore band.
My favorite portion from the interview is where they discuss Sonny’s minimalist (or perhaps ghetto) recording setup. Let’s just say, he doesn’t use a mouse and uses blown speakers.
Read the interview.

Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites- Monome Style

Michael Sifeldeen apparantly has some tricks up his sleeve and this video demonstrates just  few of themt. He states on his Vimeo page that he has a surprise coming for us, but makes no mention as to what it may be.
In this video, he has his grayscale 128 set up to loop samples from Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites from Skrillex. I like what he has so far and it will definitely has potential once it’s cleaned up. What we are watching here could very well be the future of …

DIY Etch-a-Sketch Monome

User Chili over on Vimeo.com uploaded a video of his DIY monome, cleverly called the “Fresh a Sketch.” From the site:
Introducing the Fresh-a-Sketch! a monome 40h kit built into an old Etch-a-Sketch complete with working pots knobs and two infrared controllers… Think DIY D-beams!
I’m using monome_midi_64 from monome base to route monome presses to Ableton Live. The adc function of this patch makes it handy for mapping the pots and beams…
Ableton is basically acting as a sampler in clip view with some midi mappings and macros for the fx chains…
all …

Learn How to Mix Like a Pro With the WD-1 Trainer

I recently stumbled across a pretty neat flash toy called the WD-1 Trainer. Essentially, it is a flash version of a physical loop-based mixer. In my opinion, it’s quite fun to play with and certainly gives you the feeling of building an electronic song, just as a live DJ would.
