vavavoom

It’s been less than a year since his last album, but he couldn’t wait to unleash a whole new batch.  It’s been said that Bassnectar has adjusted his sound to fit a more party-ready, mainstream sound in an effort to win fans, but we don’t think that is the case.  Lorin Ashton, the man behind Bassnectar, still brings his own unique form of bass music only now fans are catching on in throngs.  His brand of “omnitempo maximalism” is really on display here with his new album, Va Va Voom, …

Troy Beetles, aka Datsik (sometimes stylized as DatSik!), is one of the biggest Dubstep acts in North America, and surely top 3 out of Canada (along with Excision and Downlink). The Kelowna native has finally put together a studio album after 3 years of releasing singles and EP to critical and club acclaim. Vitamin D, which drops this tuesday, is being released on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak imprint.  The album has already had 2 singles, Fully Blown and Evilution but this album goes beyond just those two.  Datsik got together …

Gemini has really become a rising star in the dub world and ever since he released his Blue EP he has become one of my personal favorites.  With his anthemic take on EDM, his sound is emotionally provocative and sure to win over who ever hears him.  His newest release, Fire Inside EP is quite a diverse one.  With an electro house opener, two dubstep bangers, and an electronica chill out track, this EP truely shows off his great production and musicianship.  The opening title track, Fire Inside, uses Greta Svabo Bech’s (of Raise Your …

Although he’s not the most well known on his label, Cookie Monsta is an extremely talented producer and his newest EP only proves that further.  Circus Records’ own Cookie Monsta has put together this new 4-track EP and it’s not to be missed.  This is the kind of filth that just makes you want to rage and womp your heart out.  The EP’s title track, Riot! more than sets the tone with the ominous samples and energetic builds. The combination of stellar cinematic samples, crazy wobbles, and beast bass make …

Ultra Day 3 headline

Day 3
My knees were weak, my arms were heavy, thank god I didn’t vomit on my sweater, and I was ALMOST ready to attend Ultra Day 3. Twenty hours of going HAM takes a lot out of you, but even just staring at Day 3’s lineup was enough to get my ass outta bed and on the metro for a third day of rigorous auditory insanity. Day 3’s lineup was arguably the best of the weekend, and it’s a damn shame that I had to choose between sets such as …

Ultra Day 2

Day 2
Day 2 of Ultra Music Festival began as a battalion of bass and culminated in grandiose fashion. The majority of my day was spent in the Hellishly-hot dubstep tent: a pit of unrelenting grime, where you were just as likely to see a yolked-out meat head thrashing away to the filth as you were a delicate, feminine beaut, getting down to the dirt. Only in Miami.
Zeds Dead started the day off right, bringing that jungle, tribal flavor with their percussion heavy bass tracks. The Canadian duo had me dripping …

Rusko‘s new album Songs dropped today via Mad Decent Records, but it isn’t something you should exactly be rushing towards.  After putting out a relatively diverse set of sounds on his debut album O.M.G., the new drop has a heavily Jamaican-reggae sound to it, peppered with superficial party flavored tracks and attempts at a more club/rave-ready sound.  The album is not without its bright spots, as the lead single “Somebody To Love” is truly a euphoric track with a sick basslines, and a soulful hook. It is this brand of dub-pop that …

Author’s Note: This is now #1 on the Dubstep BeatPort Charts!

Pendulum/Knife Party isn’t the only act coming out from down under these days.
Say hello, to Rory Smith, aka Informant.
Only age 20, Informant has already had a deal with Armada and now after signing with LessThan3, he is due for an entirely new EP dropping this Thursday.  Glowing Up is a tour de force that is sure to make Informant a star and proves he is a force to be reckoned with.  What seperates the Perth native from others, is his expressive style that …

The last time Big Giangtic came to St. Louis they played on the weekend before Haloween 2010 at a small club in a sketchy part of town. The venue sits, hardly noticeable, amongst taquerias and hardware stores on a street seemingly straight from a post-apocaplyptic zombie flick.  Beyond the blackout windows and the fans smoking outside, the club was dark and full of dudes in hoodies drinking PBR and girls runnning around in costumes, swinging glowsticks, and really getting in to the music. But for such a small club, there was still plenty of room to move …

So I’m going to go ahead and say it: Porter Robinson is the best live performer I have ever seen. Feel free to disagree with me, you’re entitled to your own opinion, but hear me out. Sure, he does not boast an incredible stage setup, à la mau5 or Chemical Brothers. Nor does he play those giant, stadium-sized big room house tracks, à la Swedish House Mafia or Tiësto. But I’ll tell you what he does do… he plays three times as many tracks as any other DJ out there, …
